He has had every opportunity to continue to be a leader to his party and to his country, and stand up against Trump and his administration's push towards fascism. Instead, he has retreated completely. By choosing to remain silent, he is solidifying his legacy of cowardice.

Sen. Jack Reed is the Ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, which provides him endless opportunities to shape US military and defense policy. Instead of standing up for service members and the American people, he has chosen to push through Trump’s agenda of unfettered militarism and confirm unqualified MAGA loyalists like Pete Hegseth to lead our nation’s military.

Retired Army General and former CIA Director David Petraeus has a long and illustrious career of service. Rather than defend the Constitution, as he has sworn to do, he has instead chosen to cater to Trump as much as he can. At a conference, he said the world was in for “exciting times” under Trump. The world and the country have instead been thrown headlong into crisis after crisis since his inauguration.

Instead of asking the tough questions required of them, the Republican members of the Senate Armed Services Committee chose to protect themselves. Out of fear of being primaried, they rubber stamped Pete Hegseth to cater to Trump and his blindly loyal MAGA cronies. Now, we have the most unqualified Secretary of Defense in modern history leading our armed forces, making our country and the world less safe.
